September 6, 2022 - Climate Change and the Rust Belt
Glen Leroy, FAIA
A veteran urban planner, designer, and teacher, our speaker is a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners and is also a fellow of the American Institute of Architects. He will join us via Zoom to talk about how climate change will change the way Michigan and the other surrounding states are being affected now and what we can do going forward to deal with environmental change.
Every day we hear the news: "The stock market is up...the stock market is down.."! These reports are followed by"...on the news that". Everything reported is based on looking backward. Fellow Rotarian Eric from the Flushing club will be here to help us understand the big picture and see why the stock market behaves as it does.
This week we get a two-fer, Michigan architects who share a passion for preserving historical buildings and will tell us about their work. Ron and Jackie co-authored a book on the preservation and repurposing Michigan railroad depots and both have a portfolio of projects they have done in our state, ranging from Jackie's work on the Mott Applewood Estate to Ron's work with Cranbrook House in Bloomfield Hills. Don't miss this very special look into our state's heritage.
Each month during the school year the club honors two students from each of three high schools in the area, Carman-Ainsworth, Swartz Creek and Powers Catholic. To accommodate each school's health policies, we will be honoring students either via Zoom or in person this year.
At the end of the year one student from each school will be selected for Student of the Year and will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship.
