Suppose you had a job and a family who needed a place to live. You were a single parent or you and your partner were both working and couldn't afford rent or make a down payment on a mortgage. For more than half of us, this is not a pipe-dream, it is a reality. Hear from a group of people who are trying to help this crisis in our Michigan home towns and how they need our help.
Hear what the experts in this challenge have to say, our local friends who need our help as Rotarians to make a difference in our world.
Each month during the school year the club honors two students from each of three high schools in the area, Carman-Ainsworth, Swartz Creek and Powers Catholic. To accommodate each school's health policies, we will be honoring students either via Zoom or in person this year.
At the end of the year one previous honoree from each school will be selected for Student of the Year and will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship.
Michigan is the home to 120 lighthouses of which about 3 dozen are classified as offshore - constructed on isolated islands or on shoals or reefs. Bryan's talk will focus on 5 of these historic lighthouses with stories about their history and how his office is working to preserve this amazing part of our state's history.
McLaren Hospital in Flint offers state-of-the-art treatment for a myriad of diseases. Treatment often requires a long term stay for patients and their families which is where the Hospitality Center comes in. It not only provides an extended place to stay, it gives families an opportunity to share their joint coping with life-threatening diseases and the mutual healing that provides.
This will also be our quarterly Club Assembly. On the agenda is the board's proposal to revamp the club dues amount so that it a) covers club, district and Rotary International costs, b) encourages meeting attendance and c) "Is fair to all concerned".
Each week the club holds a 50/50 drawing with proceeds going to our literacy project fund. Tickets are $1.00 each, 3 for $2.00. Three tickets from that week's donations are drawn and, in turn, each drawn ticket holder gets to select a card from an ever shrinking deck hoping to get the designated card and win the pot. Losing cards are discarded, the deck gets smaller and if no one wins the pot that week, it is rolled over to the next drawing.
